What it measures

Fourteen Things an Editor Notices in the First Chapter

None of these are rules, and none of them are pass or fail. They are the things that form an editor’s impression while reading — counted, so you can see them too.

  • Length and pages. Word count, what that is in printed pages, and how long it takes to read.
  • Sentence rhythm. Average and median length, your longest, and how much of the chapter runs past thirty words.
  • Reading level. Flesch reading ease and grade level, against where your genre usually sits.
  • Dialogue balance. How much of the chapter is people speaking rather than being described.
  • Passive voice. How often the subject has something done to it instead of doing something.
  • Adverbs and filler. The -ly rate, and the words that survive a first draft and rarely a second.
  • Filter words. The verbs that hold a reader one step back from the scene.
  • Repetition. Your most-used words and how often sentences open on the same one.
